I think what happened was Miles wanted everyone to come in at that point. I think this because if you listen to the 1964 recording of Stella by Starlight Miles does the same line but the whole rhythm section bursts in where Hancock played the chord.
I remember the first time I heard that on the record I just felt like my soul was going to burst.

to glare over at him?
